Anxious thoughts can be very convincing, even when they aren’t connected to any real-life problem.
Are You Plagued by Anxious, What-If Thoughts?
Check all of the following statements that describe you.
I am constantly wondering if I have bothered people at home or work.
I often wonder if physical sensations I have could be signs of a disease.
I spend time researching symptoms on the Internet to reassure myself that I’m not sick.
I review my work and my calendar repeatedly to see whether I have forgotten or missed something important.
I spend hours or days feeling anxious, as if something bad is about to happen. (I wait for “the other shoe to drop.”)
When someone calls me or says in person that he or she wants to talk, I immediately assume I will be chastised, fired, or told I have done something wrong.
I have often gotten rid of one anxious thought only to have another pop up with the same intensity.
If you make a mistake, no matter how small, do any of these apply to you?
I think over and over about what bad things can happen when I make a mistake.
If I make a mistake at work, I spend hours worrying if I will get into serious trouble, even if I’m not sure anyone has noticed it.
If I suspect I have made a social error, such as forgetting a name, dropping food on someone’s carpet, or laughing when someone was being serious, I think that friends will talk about me or stop liking me. I can feel sick for days about it.
I have anxious thoughts for days or even weeks prior to an activity during which I might have a panic or social-anxiety attack.
I think about mistakes I made in the past and wonder if I could still get into trouble now.
If you checked any of the boxes in these two lists, do the following thought-stopping method when you notice anxious thoughts coming on. If you checked three or more boxes, it means that anxious thoughts are interfering with your life and you might need all the various interventions that go with thought-stopping.
